Well, it's easy to see, the cafe's quieter now, because it's being refurbished again .. and people are  not keen on having dust in their hair when they leave and finding dabs of paint on their clothing and tripping over ladders (I typed laddies first) .. and listening to hammering and banging and loud radios as the work gets done.

I've popped in for a quick cuppa in the quiet corner .. over there ... am sure the workpeople will get even there one day, then we'll have to move to another quiet corner.

I did hear a whisper that maybe our ardent picture posters may be back from their cruise round the world soon?

Say Hi to your Dad from us, Wendy.

And what would the next customer like, for the waitresses are sitting waiting amidst the dust and the paint and the fumes .. delightful place....?

Greetings everyone from...

Ah yes, there's Mags sipping a cuppa under the white drop cloth to keep the dust off her special christmas sweater! Just a guess!
So, if the place has been torn up and redone, do we have a real movie theatre area with HD and surround sound! Sure hope so! How about it Ed, can you get it all donated for the 'good cause' of entertainment for we who visit Petloss? I love movies especially this time of year when so many different types are released.
I think that as I came to the Cafe wearing my very most casual jeans and sweater, no worries about the dust, I think I'll make my own egg nog latte. Anyone else want to join in?
Is there snow outside, I just wondered? Pictures anyone?
Mags, I love your nativity scene. Very lovely, thank you for that.

(Sometimes our real life slips

over into our Internet life ..

I have a workman in the bathroom,

but as my bathroom is downstairs

at the end of the kitchen,

all his tools, etc are in the kitchen ..

I fled the scene to have dinner at local hostelry,

where all was calm,

except for a couple of dogs,

the television and friendly banter!)

Well It's been one heck of a holiday season hasn't it?
I'm still on IV antibiotics  fighting the same infection in my knee I've had for 11 months and diagnosed with some dumb muscle problem now.

Ollie my golden retriever guide dog recently began eating the corners from his blanket which of course I had to take away so now he's depressed as well as nervous.
The reason for him being nervous was our bathroom ceiling collapsed on Christmas day because two floors about our apartment someone overflowed their toilet.
Workmen were here for two days after that tearing the rest of the tiles out and replacing the ceiling.
Fireworks on New Years eve didn't help either as he has fears of those and thunderstorms which I'm sure we will soon have based on the bad luck theory.

So I stopped in for something stronger then coffee this morning and to bend the bar tenders ear.

Ok that feels better but I best go before I have one too many of whatever that was I just ordered lol.

Thanks for the nice place to unwind and relax now back to life as we know it.

Love and Hugs,
AurichWolf

Sending my New Year's wishes to everyone visiting the Cafe this year. I hope you all have good health, happiness and dreams come true.
Now, where's Mags and the others to sit and have a good chat about the 'new' Cafe since it's been remodelled and is all finished now. Any pictures anyone?
I'll have a lovely Peppermint Liquorice tea with a touch of milk please.

Oh dear Kathy, what a bundle you've been coping with there ... was it you I saw legless in the corner of the Cafe or someone else?   Anyway, glad it helped to pour it all out to the bar tender ...

Peppermint Liquorice tea, I have never tasted, can I have some?

Liquorice might be helpful, as I swallowed a filling Monday evening .. so every little helps ....................................

Pictures?

Crawls in, shakes head as if just waking from a long long winter's nap, brushes cobwebs off self and the scent of mothballs (don't I just wish ~ sigh!!!) and sits down with the very sweet and always loyal Little Gracie.

She whispers shyly in my ear that with the Stock Market being so volatile these days there have been take-over rumors going around that the strange gentlewoman in the corner has made an offer for The Petloss Cafe.

I look over "When, what to my wondering eyes should appear" (with my many apologies to Clement Clarke Moore) but a very unlikely Daphne Dodo Bird who has made it known that she wishes to buy up the Cafe and change its name to "Gone The Way of The Dodo Bird."

(The strains of  "Dodo" by  Dave Matthews come on the Jukebox.)

Anyone have any idea what the lyrics to that song mean? Jolly good pictures of England though! Is that where our new Cafe will be? It will of course be easy for you to waitress there then Mags, in your spare time to pay off your never-ending tab, but I don't know if Gracie's Mama will let her work the late shift on evenings anymore.

Which reminds me... speaking of tabs.... I heard the dodo in the corner is picking up the tab.

(Do you know how long in this age of being politically correct I have waited to use that very line.  )

Erm, I mean Daphne is picking up the tab...

PS. My thanks to Mags for the idea and please come sit with me over by the fireplace, Kathy, where you can put your leg up and rest. You are heartily welcome. I have found much healing here and so many people have come and gone but we always keep their seats warm in our hearts. Always. Drink up everyone!

The melancholy dodo on the bar-stool notes evening has fallen and she is still alone. She sits softly humming along to the jukebox while watching the falling snow in the darkness.

It is the happy hour and she is not.

Little Gracie brings her some hot chocolate and together they sit watching the snow fall...

And fall...

And fall some more...

Still they are alone.

The jukebox plays: Song for a Winter's Night (The Original of course)

Round Lake, Ontario

Finally after the music has played a dozen times. Little Gracie under the clever pretext of getting more marshmallows for the cooling hot chocolate, kicks the jukebox on the way by it. (Gently, of course, because despite Mama letting her work in a bar, she is after-all bringing her up properly to be such a good girl.)

The music skips, the dodo startles, Feist comes on.  1234 (Boy, those Canucks surely are talented people but really, really low-budget sets!!!)

Anyone want to dance???

Little Gracie whispers to her dear Mama perhaps Punkin's Mummy has Cabin Fever again after one too many snowbound days in the True Frozen North ~ Strong and Free. Apparently so, Mama says to Little Gracie but with a smile she thinks, "Either that or she is downing one too many of those little ice cream drinks with little pink umbrellas again!"

Well, I'm not a dancer by any means, but I'll happily sit here, sip my hot dark chocolate (milk chocolate is so wimpy), and watch the snow falll and fall and fall. . . .  Here in the tropics of Pennsylvania, we are not blessed with snow; when it's cold, it's clear, but when it gets cloudy, it also gets warm. How we long for a real winter,  one in which we can snuggle and cocoon.

I hear tell that Little Gracie will never have any more snow as she & her family are moving to the even-more-tropical South.  Well, as they say, "Better thee than me!"

Delightful day here today - very cloudy, breezy, cool - a perfect day for
ensconcing myself in the Cafe, watching the snow fall and fall and fall. .

Hey babe,  still?

I missed you in editing although if you look at the times, I think it was just that it took me so long to finish my gabby post as I was interrupted by a phone call.

I am so glad you dropped by. I love the blue snowflakes and the snow on the pines is beautiful and sets a lovely mood. (Did you make it yourself in "This winter that isn't" down your way?)

Come sit by the fire with me. Little Gracie assures me the chocolate is made from the best Godiva dark chocolate just for you. We can put our feet up and enjoy a good chat before I have to leave to do the vacuuming..

I couldn't dance in public either until I was in my 50s, Sharon ...
come on, gal, grab my hand, Colleen's hand, Barb's hand,
Wendy's hand ... then sort out how many hands you've got left?
Let alone feet !

I can see the sight now ... legs, arms, hands twirling everywhere ..
music playing ... waitresses and the odd waiter running to and fro ...
I've never heard so much noise.

Who will join me in the quiet corner, where we can put our feet
up and watch the snowdrops beginning to bloom outside and
the daffodils and crocuses beginning to sprout ... so delightful.

The dodo's not dead, just taking a break ... scurrying around
'other lands', moving house, trying to repair dead computers,
gee up there!  Stocking up the food cupboard, trying not to
do the cleaniing ... forgetting it's now tea-time in the UK ...
so the dodo must away .......................

Did someone mention sitting down and putting one's feet up and just watching the world drift along?
Now that's my idea of having fun.
Am I getting old or what?

You girls just dance away and some of us will watch and have lots of fun doing that.

If that waiter comes past I'll flag him down and see if they have hot chocolate here.
That's about as strong as I can handle and it's cold so it sounds good to me. lol

Cheers

After just 'catching up' on news here, I've decided to after my long absence to bring a little treat for everyone.
Just yummy out of the oven, a triple berry crumble. Smells so tasty that I'm sure everyone will be dropping in for their teas, dark hot chocolates and my fav. lately, jasmine green tea.
Welcome back to Colleen who after her sojourn has again graced the cafe with her imaginative ideas and great graphics, not to mention links to an plethora of music and ideas.
So, with Spring perhaps on it's way slowly, we may need to do a little spring cleaning around here and maybe a new coat of paint on the walls? Perhaps a group of volunteer decorators each with their own talents to offer?
Maybe the colours could be soft pinks and greens?
Anyway, time to sip some tea and spoon a little of the raspberry, blackberry, blueberry crumble. It will be great to see you and sit and chat this Sunday afternoon.

Belated Happy Heart's day, everyone!
Hope your cold is better, Mags. My dear old dad now in his 96th year has one too. I'm thinking that perhaps a scotch would help him out a little too!
Hey, don't you all think there should be a 'heart' symbol on the keyboards upon which we type? It would make some sentences so much more meaningful, sort-of!
Ah, I'm rambling but dropped by to say, 'hi' to all.
It's time for my rental movie and some popcorn as well. Anyone else want to drop by the cafe and join me?
Oh yes, the movies are the new Harry Potter and a drama, 'Gerry.' Either is fine with me.
So, let's have a big pot of tea, maybe blackberry tonight.

Just dropping by to ask everyone to keep Sweet Wendy and her 95 year old Dad in your prayers and thoughts. Her Dad had to be hospitalized last night for respiratory distress and she has been there all night. Her Dad can't see and I know it must be both a very confusing and frightening time for both of them so please hold them close in your prayers. From the bottom of my heart, thank you and we are here for you, Wendy.  God Bless both you and your Dad and God Bless you for the labor of love it has been for you in caring for him over these past 3 years.

Much love and many warm hugs coming your way with my prayers,

Colleen

Dear Colleen, Ruth (private message), Barb and Mags,
Thank you for your very kind wishes for my dad. I told him that ladies all round the world are sending him good recovery thoughts and prayers and that made him smile.
Thank you very much, Colleen, for the first message and the hugging polar bears. Yes, it is very difficult sometimes, but seeing dad smiling occasionally last evening, as he's feeling a little better, make it all worthwhile.
Your continued good thoughts and prayers will be appreciated by my dad and myself.
Hopefully, with the miracle of antibiotics my dad's lung infection will be eliminated over the next few days.
I think while I'm here I will sit, relax and enjoy a licorice tea with a warm bluebery muffin.
Anyone want to join me?

I will join you, Wendy, especially the
blueberry muffin!

And deep in thought for you regarding
your Dad.  I lost my Dad in 1994 and only
had an aged Aunt and lots of friends to help me.

I have even less family now, don't make it easy.

You are a wonderful daughter, your Dad is
so proud of you and loves you so much.

Hugs x

Thanks Mags! I will join you and Wendy too. Wendy is
a wonderful daughter and although I know she feels blessed
to have had this time with her Dad in caring for him, it has
been a long hard road over the past 3 years and I know
how hard she has worked taking care of him. Her Dad
feels blessed to have her, I am sure, and loves her dearly.
We will sit here quietly drinking our tea by the fireplace
and we will keep a seat warm for you, Wendy. Sending
you and your dear Dad many warm hugs across the
country from snowy Toronto and praying for peace,
strength and comfort for you both now.

Much love always,

Colleen

Mind if I join you? It's very cold outside.

Hot dark chocolate sounds great to me too.
I love to watch the snow falling on the trees-from inside. Outside we are knee deep in it.

Watching the flames dance in the fireplace is so soothing. I could almost fall asleeeeeep.....

Thank you again, everyone for all the prayers and thoughtfulness in thinking of my dad and I.
Happily, I can say that today he is much improved although very tired and weak. Because of the miracle of antibiotics, it seems that his lungs are functioning much better now and his dreadful coughing is very infrequent.
He's had a restful day and I spent 9 hours with him today and settled him tonight cuddling a new furry, black and white cat (stuffed toy) named by him, 'Judy.' I did this to hopefully prevent him pulling out his intravenous as he did two nights ago.
He's been fortunate in having both the hospital chaplain and the retirement home chaplain visit him and that has provided him with much comfort.
So, I'll just settle here for a little while, perhaps someone could make a pot of camomile tea? A few cups of that will mean hopefully I'll sleep well tonight.
Anyway, all the while I'm with dad, I cannot express the appreciation of the caring of each of you, dear Petloss friends, caring for my very precious treasure of a dad from all over this world.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I will post again, promise, as to how his progress is going.

Such encouraging news, Wendy, thank you for taking the time to let us know.  I hope you were able to rest last night and recover some of your strength.

Dear everyone, especially Barb, Ruth, Sharon, and Colleen,
I have just read all your recent messages. Thank you so much.
I'm sure thanks to all your caring thoughts and prayers, my dear dad has had his best day yet. He's still recovering but certainly I saw a little more of his usual personality today with our talks.
So, after another long day, I'm here for a lovely hot chocolate and a warmed blueberry muffin.
Anyone care to join me?
Wendy
P.S. I've told dad that ladies from all around the world are thinking of him and the sweetest smile comes across his face. He says thanks too.

I'm so glad to hear about your Dad Wendy. You must bring him by to sit by the fire and have some of the wonderful cakes they have here. Tea is really good on a cold day like this. Hmmmm where was that fire? It's out -No problem, I'll start it up again. Gather round you all look like you've caught a nasty chill. Oh I know

it's so cozy by the fire Colleen.

I can't think of the name of the song that is playing now but I love it.

Mags, you really must take better

care of yourself.

Kathy, Ollie is being so good.

His fur looks like gold in the dancing light of the fire.

this just makes me sooo sleepy...

Let's open that nice cabernet savignon (or hot chocolate, depending on everyone's secret vice) while we sit in the corner by the fire with our feet up - and let's toast to Wendy's dad and her devotion to him.

Then let's toast to Ed's cyber-world that has allowed us to meet one another and to share the love we have known from our animal children....

Salut!

Thanks, Barb, for the toast a few messages back.
Everyone please do include my dad in your special prayers for the next while as he has now been moved to a very special Palliative care unit in the hospital. He's very tired now and yet smiling today while awake as I told him about a few of his favorite Herman cartoons. As his journey continues, he's still able to smile and laugh. How wonderful.
Therefore, my dear friends at the cafe, let's gather and have a little glass of champagne to smiling and laughter, no matter what life brings. We all have learned to connect and care at this wonderful Petloss site, and find friendships that span the earth. How amazing is all that caring. I often think of it.
To all my Petloss friends, thank you to each of you for your special good wishes for both my dad and myself.
You are each a treasure in the world.
Wendy
P.S. Does someone want to make a big pot of Jasmine tea and we'll all sip some after the champagne?

Wendy, as someone who has aged parents (both 91 now), I can understand at least a little of how it is for you.  I am blessed in that mine still live in their own home (with help), and are healthy, given their ages.  There are problems, of course (Mother falls what seems a lot to me), and  Dad goes to more doctors than any 3 people I know, but they're doing well.  I'll certainly keep you and your dad in my prayers.

Sorry, Barb - what I learned at the wine tasting at the retirement community on Wednesday is that I abhor dry red wine.   I'll stick with my Godiva dark-chocolate hot chocolate, please - and could someone *please* send snow my way?????   It's gotten cloudy while I was having the car inspected, but I'm not hopeful about snow. At least it has the common decency to be cold.
