Our 9 year old (nearly 10) labrador Konan recently came down with an extremely aggressive tumor. It's located at the back of his jaw where it cant be removed unlike other dogs, because essentially half his face would be missing.

It came on so quickly that a week ago he was eating normally and now he won't even open his mouth to bark or so much as lick peanut butter because of the pain. It began pushing his eye slightly out the socket from behind and causing it to leak. Even drugged up on powerful narcotics he will barely make an attempt to eat a delicious sausage.

The prognosis was poor and options regarding chemotherapy or radiation were not only extremely expensive but not guaranteed to work. But specifically regarding the aggressiveness and location of this tumor we knew we were looking at it only getting bigger and we would have to keep him on heavy painkillers 24/7 to even hope he might eat.

We decided to put him to sleep and it has been one of the toughest, most painful decision of our lives. His body and mind are okay aside from this tumor and that makes it so difficult. The kids cried and we hurt even more.

We wre taking him in later today and I still struggle so badly with this decision.

Oh, this is heartbreaking to read about your handsome Konan.  I am so deeply sorry.  This must be have been so difficult for this sudden illness and for you to see him in this condition.  He's not that old, either.  What an excruciating decision you had to make.  It's not one of many choices you have.  You have to do what you feel is right for him, as painful as it is for the rest of you.  I hope you all make it through this where you will be able to savor your memories of him.  I am truly sorry. I am crying for him. I am crying for you.  I'm sorry.  I'm going to be frank, it really sucks. Cancer sucks. Losing our best friend sucks.

After suddenly losing my little Parker, and new to pet loss sites, and reading so many tragic stories, I worry now about my other 2 little guys. I always took them granted they would live long lives till they were old. Now I don't know what will be. It scares me.

Goodbye Konan and rest in peace. Your family loved you so as you did them.  You will be reunited again. Until then, Konan, please watch over your family. They love you and will miss you tremendously.

Thank you so much. We put him to sleep today and, although peaceful, it was the most gut wrenching emotional pain of my life. I have two children and I severely overlooked the daily involvement of Konan in our lives. It made little sense to gamble on a few more months while spending thousands of dollars while he couldn't eat or drink or bark u less heavily medicated with painkillers. Good riddance cancer
