10/1 was a hard day on many levels. Other than a mouth issue that was very well controlled with just 'cold lazer' treatments and a chronic nose cold Pearl was never sick - and then suddenly on 9/27 he was and after a vet trip (that day) I was given a referral to the Vet School. 9/30 I drove him to the vet school ER and the next day he was gone. Five days to turn the world on it's head. He was not who we worried we would loose - we have 2 who we know have major issues, who are on borrowed time. Sparky has Lymphoma, has had this (that we know of) for about 18 months despite a prognosis of 3 to 4 months, and while he has had ups and downs overall he is doing well. Diamond Mask has hyperthyroidism that we are still fighting to get controlled after a year and has kidney issues we seem to have gotten controlled. Little Diamond was close to Pearl - like joined at his hip. She seemed to feel he was her protector and best buddy. I was more worried for her even before Pearl - but she has seemed lost since we lost him. Today she crashed - her hydration dropped, her potassium levels dropped and suddenly she was too weak to walk, wasn't eating, and just seemed gone. I rushed her to her vet without even calling - and her vet agreed she was in a bad state (and she was at the vets just 2 days ago). She is still at the vet's on IVs and such with the hope we can turn things around. I was told IF she does make it she is looking at a week or more before she is back to normal. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers - she needs them.

Happy update!!  We are not out of the woods yet - but I got to visit her - she was stable enough to pull her off of her IV (for a very short while), she can walk, is holding her head up, is eating like a champ, and is even a wee bit feisty!

I am so deeply sorry to hear of the unexpected loss of your Pearl, & now to have another dog so sick, how heartbreaking. I have one that’s had tons of issues & was expecting the worse , but my other healthy female , younger than him passed unexpectedly. I think its really hard on the surviving dog, they definitely miss their siblings, & they grieve too, maybe thats why your other dog got so sick.
Praying & Hoping she turns around & gets better. Thats so hard on you for having to deal with 2 heart breaks. My boy was doing terrible after his sister passed. I thought we were going to lose him as well. Thankfully with some new meds for his ears & his pain, he seems to be doing better for the moment. But its been 5 months since Jada passed & I think when they first lose their friend , & everything is upside down, it affects their health as well. It sounds like you have alot on your plate.
Healing thoughts & hugs to you,
Jada’s mom

TY to each of you. We came close - too close - to loosing Diamond. And we aren't really sure what will happen when she comes off of the IV for fluids and meds. She rallied very quickly to the IV, but she had also crashed very quickly and we don't know why. Later this morning she will be taken off the IV and monitored very closely. If she does okay she will get to come home. I was happy to see her showing some of her calico cattitude visit (she is a wee 5 pound calico kitty even at her biggest, Pearl was a 15 pound orange and white kitty). She was so happy to see me until she heard my hubby's voice on the phone - but when I handed her back to the vet tech to go home she was grabbing for me.

Doglife, the loss of her best friend may well have been what caused her crash, they were very close. They were from the last spring the feral colony had any kittens (I finally caught the last of the ferals and had them spayed/neutered that year) and 2 sisters had litters that they combined and raised to about 6 weeks together. I finally found them all, never knew for sure which babies went with which momma. And yes, they are kitties, but a furbaby is a furbaby. I am sorry for your sudden loss also, and they do grieve sometimes to a point that can be worrying.

Ivy, I can only say I hate cancer - it has stolen too many of my babies, and yes, sometimes it is so fast. Pearl had a cancer that only showed up 5 days before we lost him. And he was at the Vet School to get a clear diagnosis less than 24 hours.

Brenrae, so many times we have both been here - our feral colony is now gone. Once the last kitten was caught and kept or adopted out to what we hope were good homes through a local cat rescue and the last adult was spayed or neutered we knew the colony would fade away - the last kittens are 16 1/2 years old now. It never gets easier does it.

Such good news about Diamond! Here's hoping she will do well when taken off her IV!

Ghatten, I don't think I've posted much on your threads, but I've always read your posts ever since I first came to this board. I've cried when you've let us know one of your beloved kitties has passed away, and I've watched from afar as your feral colony has changed. It is poignant that your feral colony is now gone and the last kittens are 16 1/2 years old. Once they are gone - and I certainly hope you have many more years with those that are still alive - it will be the end of an era for you. In a way, it will be sad, but goodness all of the memories and love you'll be able to remember! Still, I hope it is many more years until that time comes...

Ty Kelly. So much we have shared here on this board. Our feral colony is gone - 4 years now. Those last kittens have been indoors only since they were caught, and there are only 3 still here. Only 1 of our 4 rescued 'throw aways' remains (and he is approximately 13 to 14 years old and has Lymphoma). We still have our niece's 2, and have a 4 year old who was a feral, but hit by a car and badly injured - who tamed as he healed, and hubby rescued a 3 1/2 month old the day after we lost Pearl (she was someone's and showed up in our yard - been trying since 10/2 to find her owner with no luck)

Diamond is home - frail and still a bit weak, but doing okay. And I will take what we are given. But I do want more . . . .

Diamond may need antidepressant medication. My Dawn (cat) was so depressed after her brother Angel died that I thought she was dying. $3000.00 worth of tests later the vet concluded that she is mainly depressed. Dawn was put on antidepressants and pirked up right away. They get depressed and anxious too.
Now sadly both are gone. Had to free my Dawn out of her body that was no longer serving her on 9/13. Now I am so lonely. But!!! incouraged that Dawn and Angel are together again waiting for me on the other side. Oh they loved each other so much. Always together since conception really!
Hope Diamond pulls through. I really do.

AngelDawn, I wish anti depressants would do the job - loosing Pearl may have been the 'last straw' for her. Like your babies mine were littermates. But I really felt (as did my vet) she would be the next furbaby we lost before Pearl even got sick. Her kidneys have been weak for a while now and her thyroid just isn't responding well to treatment so her little body is in overdrive from her hyper-thyroidism. I am sorry for your losses, one is hard enough - 2 close together is worse.

Diamond has been doing good since she got home - still weak but stronger as time passes. She hated her meds before so adding a potassium supplement helped her, but not her cattitude at med times. For now it is continue to try to get her issues under control and enjoy whatever time we have while we do fight for more time.

Yeah, she has medical challenges. My Dawn died 5.5 years after Angel. I kept her healthier longer with change of diets and hypertension medication. Its miserable without her around here. I just want to crawl in a corner and die.
Good luck with Diamond. You're doing a fantastic job.

Diamond was doing so much better - tonight she seems out of sorts but not in distress. Sorry for the slow updates - it has been hectic. As I had said when this all started (when we lost Pearl), we have 2 who are a concern and neither is Pearl - loosing him 10/1 blind-sided us. Diamond was our biggest concern - but again it seems I have been looking the wrong was. Sparky is around 13 years old, we aren't really sure since he was a throw-away who showed up one night injured but friendly - Diamond is 15 1/2 years old. Sparky has been battling lymphoma for about 18 months but seemingly doing fine with his last several ultrasounds showing zero to negative growth - but his latest blood work says now he is in kidney failure. Our vet says we really have no real good options, treat the symptoms and keep him happy and comfortable for as long as we can. Or we can drag him through a bunch of stuff at the vet school, and while it might buy him a little more time it likely would not get him more quality time at home - just more time sick in a clinical setting away from his family. I will do my best to keep everyone updated.

Sparky continues to do well - although still very underweight. He gets around fine and begs for people food.

Diamond is a different story. She is alert and gets around okay - but is so frail looking and is tiny at just over 3 pounds. She still drinks like a champ, but shows little interest in most food (other than things she shouldn't have given he bad kidneys and her thyroid issues).

Update: 11/11/18 Diamond is now down to 2 pounds, has almost no interest in food now but still drinks fine. She is a bit weak, but gets where she wants to.

Diamond Mask

Diamond shifted, trying to get comfortable was difficult as thin as she had become and her stiff joints only made getting comfortable harder. Mommy and Daddy tried hard to find foods to help her gain her weight back, and she felt like all she did was eat and drink, but nothing seemed to add any weight. Her doctor said her weight was dropping at an alarming rate, but nothing seemed to help. She missed he brother Pearl. He was big and soft and warm, and didn’t mind when she laid on him and made bread. But Pearl was gone now, and she was even thinner and felt cold and stiff. Mommy picked her up gently and laid her in a soft warm basket filled with soft blankets and took her to see if her doctor had any ideas.

Her doctor and Mommy talked for a bit, her doctor petted her gently. Mommy was crying and her doctor looked sad. Mommy picked her up and held her for a bit then laid her back down gently. Then her doctor gave her some medicines and her frail body relaxed and she felt comfortable. As she nodded off she wondered what the new med was – it really helped.

Diamond slowly woke feeling better than she had in a while. She was warm and on something soft and warm, and best of all it smelled like her brother Pearl. She stretched contentedly and began making bread.

“Figures, plopped on top of me and making bread, and not even a hello first.” Diamond was suddenly wide awake, she knew the voice without opening her eyes. But Pearl would have sneezed by now, and he was gone. But could it be Pearl? Now she was afraid to open her eyes, afraid the beautiful dream would end and she would be cold and achy and Pearl would still be gone. A large orange and white head nudged her, encouraging her to wake and open her eyes. “Come on sleepyhead, I have missed you.” Then she felt him washing her calico fur and white blazed face.

Diamond looked up at her brother, “I have missed you so much. But how are you here? You are gone.” As she began to look around she realized she was surrounded. Dracula was very nearby with all of the indoor furball gang that were gone and Goldie was there too with all of the outdoor backyard pride the feral kitties belonged to. But that was not possible – they were all gone now. She looked at all of them confused, then she began to notice where she was. “Why am I outside? Mommy is gonna be upset with someone! And where are we? I don’t recognize any of this place.”

Dracula walked over and laid down beside Pearl. “What do you remember? What was happening just before you woke?” He waited a moment for her to think back, and he looked kinda sad.

“I was with Mommy and she was talking with our doctor. They both looked so sad. But I’m better now – Mommy and Daddy will be so happy!” She looked around some more. This place was lovely, Daddy must have been working really hard in the yard, but she did not recognize the space so it must be out front where she couldn’t see from the windows. “What part of the yard are we in? It is so perfect here. It was raining a bit when we left earlier, but it’s stopped now and the rainbow seems sooooo much prettier and so huge when I don’t have to see it through a window.”

Now Pearl looked really sad. “This isn’t in Daddy’s yard. Do you remember Mommy telling us stories about the rainbows whenever one of us left? About the special meadow . . . .?” His voice trailed off as Diamond pondered his words. Yes, Mommy spoke about a special meadow, and a bridge made of rainbows. A place for furbabies to wait and play until their mommies and daddies joined them. Suddenly her eyes flew wide open and she began to look around.

“NOOOOOO! Mommy has been trying so hard to help me get well – Daddy even lets me sleep with him so no one can bother me at night. They will be looking for me! I need to go home NOW!” Diamond’s words rose to a volume she didn’t even know she could create, “They need me, I cannot be here. They will worry about where I am and be so hurt.”

Dracula wrapped his large form around her to comfort her, “They know where you are, and yes they will hurt. But they knew you were hurting and frail, and that they couldn’t make you better. They will cry and be sad. But they will be okay because they know you are okay and that we will all be together someday.” Diamond looked at all of her furry family that was here and wondered, hoped that Dracula was right. Just then she heard her Mommy and Daddy, heard their tears. She ran to where the sound was, but they weren’t there – just a large crystal clear pond. Pearl walked up beside her, “This is a special reflecting pond,” he told Diamond. “Here you don’t see your own reflection, you see reflections of the ones you love who are not here yet. Let your heart think about Mommy and Daddy and look deep into the waters. You will see them when you look, and you can sent them your love.”

Diamond looked deep into the waters. As she thought about her Mommy and Daddy she saw them. They were crying, but she felt in her own heart that they would be okay, they would heal with time. “I love you Mommy and Daddy. I will try to be a good girl, and I will wait for you and keep watch for you.” And as she sent them her love she could feel them begin to heal a small bit. And as Diamond sent her love to Mommy and Daddy the sky around the pond lit up with the most beautiful rainbow she had ever seen.
