I just finished reading a wonderful book titled "Huck" by Janet Elder.

It is a wonderful book about how one little dog brought a family together.  It is not a sad book about anyone that will die.  I would never recommend a book like that here.

It is an easy read.  I read it in about 4 days.  Let me know if anyone has read it yet.

I have started "The Art of Racing in the Rain" and it is a good so far.  I will have to keep my eyes open for Huck though, grateful that it won't be sad read.

"The Art of Racing in the Rain" is by Dean R. Koontz (sp?), and is one of the best books I've ever read.  It is about his dog, Trixie, whose life and death has such a profound impact on the lives of this famous author and his wife.  I would recommend it to anyone!  Rick

Fostersmommy, you are right!!  I was thinking of "A Big Little Life" by Dean R. Koontz.  I read them both and got them mixed up.  Both excellent books....Dean's book being about his dog Trixie.  Sorry for the confusion!  Rick

The Art of Racing in the Rain was awesome. Garth Stein did a great job and Enzo is a dog I will remember, like Marley.  Another great book is Water for Elephants.  Dean Koontz wrote "The Darkest Evening of the Year" which is about Goldens, gifted Goldens, their rescue and a mystery.  Really good.

A few months ago someone mentioned a book that I can not recall the name of.  I think it similar in name to the "Marley and Me" book, maybe simply "Marley" but not the same author.  Does anyone know what book I am referring to?  I went the the bookstore to inquire and they had no idea.  Any help would be appreciated!

I have suggested Amazing Gracie.  It is short. Sweet. And absolutely hilarious. Please don't get it confused with Saving Gracie. That one is tougher on the heart.  I read Amazing Gracie 2 weeks after loosing my Chow. And it was the only thing for months and months that made me laugh. And it made me laugh so hard I had tears streaming down my cheeks. Absolutely wonderful.

I love books about dogs and I appreciate the recommendations. I got one recently that I loved from our semi-annual book sale for our animal shelter, "The Dogs of Babel". I have it loaned out and don't remember the author. It is not about losing a dog, more about losing a spouse, but the dog is a major character. It has very humorous parts, but it is about loss, grief, depression and the love of a dog. I highly recommend it. It made me laugh out loud and cry too.

A book I really liked was THE GUARDIAN by Nicholas Sparks.  It is one of his darker novels about obsession, but outside of the darkness the story is about a woman and her beloved dog.  I remember the ending was so powerful to me, and it did make me cry.  I couldn't put it down.

I just ordered 3 books from Amazon, "The Art of Racing in the Rain", "Amazing Gracie" and "A Dog's Purpose". Has anyone read A Dog's Purpose? It had excellent reviews...5 stars. I wanted "Huck" too, but will wait until I read these 3. Thanks for posting this topic, Clara.

Lovemypup, the book you are thinking of might be Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote.
