Every year F.O.C.A.S. http://www.focas.us/home.html
has a cat show at the animal shelter in Teterboro NJ. It’s a very informal show, with ribbons given out for categories like Best Name, Best Whiskers, Oldest Cat, etc. Every cat wins at least one ribbon. They also have a tricky tray auction with great cat-related prizes. You enter your cat for $5.00 and the proceeds go to help the animals.
Cheeseburger and I used to attend the shows; and needless to say everyone always loved him and his name. Well today was the cat show, on the 1 month anniversary of Cheesey becoming a Rainbow Bridge Baby.
My daughter, her boyfriend and his Mom were going to the show and bringing their cats and asked me to go, but I just didn’t feel up to it and told them to go ahead. I was in my room, talking to Cheese, (I do this everyday,) and I got the feeling that it was o.k. to go. I thought in lieu of the entrance fee it would nice to give a donation in memory of Cheeseburger. I asked my Mom to come with me too: (she is Cheeseburger’s Grandma and used to feed Cheesey for me when I worked late.)
I brought a picture of Cheeseburger with me, and when I got there I told the people registering the cats for the show that I didn’t have a cat to enter, but I wanted to make a donation in honor of Cheeseburger. They all remembered him and were so sorry to hear what happened. Even other people who were there with their cats remembered Cheesey. It was such a nice feeling to know Cheeseburger touched so many hearts – he was a special little boy. One of the judges even showed Cheeseburger’s picture during the introduction to the show and Cheesey got a very nice round of applause. It made me feel good to know how much people cared.
I stayed for the show and bought some tickets for the tricky tray auction. My daughter April mentioned there was a prize of a scrapbook, stickers and other things to make a nice scrapbook for Cheesey, so I put some tickets in for that prize and a few other prizes like photo frames. They pulled the number for the scrapbook prize and I won! I was so happy – it was for my little boy. They also gave me a gift in remembrance of Cheeseburger, a cute photo frame.
It was a bittersweet feeling to be there – I use to love bringing Cheeseburger to the shows and meeting others who had such a deep love for these beautiful animals as I do, but today, physically, I felt alone without him. But I do believe he was there with me in spirit.
Cheeseburger touched so many hearts – even those who only briefly knew him at the cat shows. His name always invoked a smile, and it still does. I miss him so much, but right now as I am thinking of him, I am smiling.
I love you my sweet little tiger boy – and please know, so many people remember you too.
Be strong, healthy and free…find your special place in the sun, make friends and watch your birdies. You will forever be on my mind and in my heart. I LOVE YOU CHEESEBURGER.
