I ordered a silver heart and chain (they have crosses and other types of cremation jewelry at ashestoashes.com), and it arrived today. I'm going to have my jeweler engrave Layla's name--and maybe mine on the back--on it and then put a few of her ashes inside. I feel the need to have her close to me at all times, even though the urn is sitting in my den. I want her as close to my heart as possible, and this seemed to me that it might ease some of the pain. It's not all that expensive. The silver heart was about $40 without the chain, gold-plated is only about $20 or $30 more. There are all kinds of pieces to choose from, some that a man wouldn't mind wearing either. This way, no matter where I go, a part of her is with me not just in spirit but in truth. Maybe I'll sleep better if a part of her is there with me, hanging around my neck all the time.

LAYLA, smiling, as she often did.

PS Paws to Heaven has a nice selection of vases and urns--I paid more there but got exactly what I wanted.

Thank you for sharing the information.  I have a silver Shih Tzu and a Cross that I wear as I could not find a locket that I liked.  I will look at the site.

Georgeann,

The more I read about you and Christopher, the more I feel like we are sisters of the heart. My Layla's heart was enlarged on the left side, but our experiences are so similar. I'm married to a PhD though--I decided to stop after my MSW. Worked as a mental health therapist and administrator--couldn't and can't sleep, etc etc. Hugs, Gypsy/Rhonda

Dear GypsyMagic, your Layla is adorable and it does look like she is smiling! I have a locket with some of my Mr. Meowgy's fur in it and I do feel so much better with him close to me. I got it at ashestoashes also and was extremely pleased at the service and quality.
Sleep peacefully with your darling Layla near you.

The heart arrived, and I took it and had the jeweler engrave Layla in script on one side and Rhonda on the other. I wasn't sure that I could fill it, but my husband and I did it together. It only takes a few of the finer ashes and I put in a snippit of her hair and sealed it. It's now hanging around my neck.  I know it's the heat of my skin but it feels warm, which is sort of comforting.
The heart came with a tiny funnel/stick, and a few ashes spilled onto the white paper we put underneath so I took them outside and blew them into the backyard where she used to play. The heart holds only a tiny amount--the vase is still just as full, but I feel better with part of her laying there against my heart.

Gergeann, I probably lost the note. It happens with a slight mistake in the address, and it'll likely bounce back eventually. It basically said just that, that when I read your notes I felt like we were sisters of the heart because of our experiences.

I have been looking for a locket, too, but want to put some of my Ellie's hair in it and a photo of her. Does anyone know of a place that might have one like that? I haven't, I should admit, looked at the ashestoashes or other site you mentioned, Gypsymagic/Rhonda, but I did, also, want to thank you for your response on being a mommy to my other furchildren. I have been having a better time with them now than before (as I was away for the weekend for my mom's 60th birthday, which gave me some time to work through losing Ellie). I think my oldest is a little sad, too, but am feeling some annoyance at my other since she hated Ellie the last six months and tried, numerous times, to attack and hurt her (kill if she could have). Any suggestions?

Last night I slept all night for one of the few times since Layla died. I'm wearing the silver heart around my neck, so she's with me always. Ellie, they must have lockets since the instructions for filling the heart had instructions for how to deal with lockets, too. I didn't specifically look for a locket, since I wanted some of her ashes with me. The ones for people are much nicer than the ones for pets, IMHO. They seem to think we all want pawprints, and a nice teardrop or a halfmoon crecent or heart or something is much more like the classy little girl I loved than paw prints. She didn't like for her feet to get dirty, for pete's sake...

I don't know the answer to why your other pet kept attacking--sometimes I think they know something is wrong and attack the weaker one. Although, my Maine Coon just flat out doesn't like the older cat. She lets the dogs lick her ears and love on her, and she snuggles with them but she just doesn't like that cat. Maybe your "meanie" was jealous of the extra attention the other one got? Maybe it needs to be checked by a vet to make sure there isn't something hurting that makes it irritable? Just a couple of suggestions.

Ellie's mom:  I went back to ashestoashes.com and they do have lockets. They're under cremation jewelry, kind of far down. You can paste a photo on one inside and put some hair or a tiny bit of ashes etc on the other. They're pretty elaborate looking--not just plain outside; I don't know what you were looking for.

If anyone is looking for an urn they have some that look (in the photos) a lot like the cloisonne one that I paid $140 for and their price is only $18. I can't swear what they look like in real life since I didn't find this website until later--not that I cared what the one I bought cost, truthfully, when it came to Layla--but they seem pretty nice if you're in need of something of the sort.
