I had my 11 year old rabbit put to sleep on Saturday. It was a peaceful death at home and without pain.
I can’t help feeling guilty about the decision, he had a lump on his foot that wasn’t healing and had to be bandaged everyday which was painful for him and he had ear problems that didn’t seem to get better. But he was still eating and drinking and would play and cuddle with me. We’d made the decision a week before after thinking about it for a while because he seemed to be getting worse.
I came home 2 days before with the date already booked and although he still has his health problems he seemed more back to normal than usual.
My family agreed to have him put down but it was ultimately my decision. I know he was ill and had been for a while but I feel so awful now that he has gone. It breaks my heart thinking that we might have been able to do more for him, I feel so alone without him.
I really hope he’s happy and in a good place right now he deserves the best. I hope he understands

Jp I hope you got my reply thanking you. I wish I could be as good a comfort to you as you were to me I can only say the little bit I know of you is so impressive that I know your rabbit had the best life and the best parent and as you said to me - how you are feeling is a testament to your love for him. I had a rabbit some years back I had to euthanize. I bet they are in a wonderful place where nothing can ever hurt them again.

Thank you for your kind words it’s lovely to read and really means a lot. It’s just so horrible having to make the decision to pts and not knowing what the right thing to do is but it does help being able to talk about it with people who are going through the same thing.
