My son blessed me with two basenjis six years ago. My benji became my favourite dog instantly. I took him to the vet in March to be told he had a reverse sneeze. In June I was told that they had made a mistake he had a malignant tumour in his trachea. Two days later he was coughing and it seemed like he could not catch his breath. I phoned the vet and they had given him cough suppressant and told me to wait a few more days. On Saturday afternoon he could not sleep due to the coughing and Saturday night I put him down. When I went to euthanize him they asked me if I wanted to consult a vet and I said no I feel so guilty maybe I should have hung onto him longer but the end result would have been the same. Maybe I should have consulted with the vet.
I don’t know what the answer would have been but I will wonder about this all my life

I know it was an extremely difficult decision to make, but it sounds to me like you did what was best for Benji.  You also gave him a wonderful life for six years where he was clearly loved.  I don't think there is anything you should feel guilty about.

I am truly sorry for your loss. It’s the hardest thing to make that horrible decision. My dog too was coughing so much and it just kept getting worse and worse and nothing was helping. I made that decision as well and can’t stop feeling guilty myself although I did consult with the vet but in cases as such there’s not much they could say. He told me to go by her quality of life and you said it yourself, the coughing was really bad so that’s not a good way to live. At the end of the day, no matter how hard it was, we ended their suffering and now we are the ones suffering without them. Sending hugs and prayers your way.
