Hi all,
New to the site and I am just looking for a place to put my thoughts down and get feedback.

We adopted our dog Kairo (mixed lab) about 8 months ago. We live in an apartment that is borderline dog friendly. I say borderline because though a lot of residents have dogs, the building wont admit to being dog friendly.

I grew up with dogs but this was the first dog i would have while living on my own with my girlfriend who also grew up with dogs.

As the months began to go on, we didnt realize how much time Kairo would be home alone.. My girlfriend was not working when we got him and then she got a job with a long commute. This meant that Kairo would now be home alone for up to 12 hours Mon - Fri. (we had a friend come and walk him in the afternoon but she would only have time to walk him and then leave)

He developed separation anxiety. We had to throw away rugs, we had to get a new couch, we could no longer have candles or plants around the house as he would eat them and get sick.. We had to baby-proof the entire apartment as we were worried that he would get into the cabinet under the sink. (He learned how to open doors / cabinets / drawers.. basically if it could be opened, he would open it.) And let alone that there would always be poop and pee on the floor even though he was house broken..

After going through this for about 6 months and managing it all to the best of our capabilities... he started to bark and howl when home alone (he was generally a quite dog before this) our neighbors began complaining and after a number of complaints we got a letter from the property management company saying we were at risk of being evicted unless we corrected the issues.

So... we now arrive to Sunday 2/23... I called the shelter we got him at and they had space for him... with an extremely heavy heart and tears in our eyes, we surrendered him.. But I can't get the thought of him being miserable in a kennel out of my head... This is still fresh and I'm sure time will heal all things but GOD does this all weigh heavy on my conscience... But I just could not find any other solution.. I am praying that he finds a new better home quickly...

Thank you for reading.

I’m so sorry your post got missed. You had to make a very hard decision. Hopefully Kairo found a new loving family and I hope you and your girlfriend are ok.
