My kitty Wizard will be passing soon of renal failure; he was given about a week.  I was sent hom with a bag of SubQ Fluids and 5 Needles....  The vet said to Return Monday if I need more needles....  Well, they forgot they were closed due to the holiday.

Now, here it is Monday, my kitty will be needing his fluids and I have no clean, unused 18g needles.  What do I do?  I've called several emergency vet hospitals and they say don't use a used needle again, but instead bring your cat down and we will give him an exam and sell you some needles...

I'm in disability and just pain out all the money I could at the vet's last week (The Vet that is closed today).  I have just enough mone set aside to put my kitty to sleep when the times comes, most likely within a week.

I man I can pay for a few needles, but the Vets here won't sell me any unless I pay to have a full exam done on my kitty.  One place even said, No you can't clean and reuse a needle it would be better to skip the fluids for a day....  I KNOW My mitty needs the fluids...  What do  I do?

When I give my cat the subq fluids, when he's had the prescribed amount, I shut off the line and the withdraw the needle and recap it immediately and leave it on the line until, usually, the next day when I replace the needle and put a new one one...  I'm just out of new ones and MY vet isn't open again until tomorrow.

HELP PLEASE!  What do I do?  Skip his fluids for a day?  Boil the needle?  Dunk it in Alcohol?  Please help me?  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE NO GUESSING!  Only answer if you know or have experience here....  My Kitty is my life and it's going to be hard loosing him.  If I even thought I did something wrong that made his last day more difficult, I would hate myself forever.

Thanks!

Bob, I am not a Vet . . I've had to to give a cat fluids in the past and DID reuse the needle . .nothing horrible happened. that was 10 years ago . . maybe they've changed the needled, redesigned them so they MUST be disgarded . I Don't Know . . but if I were you . . at this stage . .I'd just reuse the needle in the cartridge . .don't mess with it by trying to clean or boil it . . you could do more damage . . just DO IT!
The only risk is of skin infection . .at this point, that is the least of Wiz's concerns . . get the fluids in him.
And BREATHE Bob . .just BREATHE. You can do this . . stay focused . calm . please don't allow yourself to freak out . . Wiz will pick up on that . . he needs to stay calm too.
Thinking of you both . .
You'll be fine!
Katherine
ps. God bless Emerg Clinics . . BUT . . wouldn't it be nice if they could get their heads out of their behinds once in awhile!!!

Thank you.  I went to the emergency vet place down the street...  Only place open...  Tey said I shouldn't use the same needle.  The nice vet tech girl felt so bad for me she tried getting me a needle and her boss wouldn't let her unless they did a check-up on the cat of like $65.00.  They said it was state law as the needles are a prescription and they can't give them out or sell them without a prescription.

A couple places in Mass that I called simply for their opionion, said they would give me a needle if I could get there.  But they were like 1 to 1 1/2 hrs away and I just couldn't do that.  I am very uncomfortable with most vets in New Hampshire.  Money is the main concern, the health and welfare of your animal is somewhere on the concern list, just unfortunately not very high.

So, the vet tech told me just to get a cotton ball and wipe downward a few times with a little alcohol and use it.  She said I may have to push a little harder to get it through the skin though (and I did have to).

So, I can home, gently warmed up the fluids and gave it to Wizzy.  He didn't like it, but is was so super good!  He's certainly doing and handling this far better than me!

I love Wizzy and I can't believe I'll be without him shortly....  Just short of 17 years is a long time to have a special friend like Wizard.

I LOVE YOU WIZARD!

Bob,

Try calling your vet to see if you get an answering service or a number for a pager. See if you can page the Dr on call and have them call you. They can offer you the best advice.

I had to do it with Bella one Sunday.

I'm thinking about you.

Thanks Katherine,

I'm not having a very good day today...   I'm so sad.  Keep crying.  As you'll see in my post "Is This Wizard's Last Day? Or Just A Down Day?"

Thanks for all the support!  I'm sure VERY soon I'll be sobbing on here pretty heavily!

There are feed stores andpet stores that sell vaccines. Buy the vaccines and buy the syringe that goes with it and take the needle off it and use that. You should be useing 20 gage not 18 gage needles I find it applorable that nobody at the ER clinic could slip you a few needles. I mean come on we are talking cents here. Had I been there I would have bought the damn things foryou. I hate these vets and techs that play by the rules no matter who gets hurt. I wonder how they would feel if the situation was reversed. All these damn animal lovers that won't bend a rule or look the other way in order to help a sick kitty

Bob,

Call your regular vet, not one who doesn't know Wizzy.  Most, if not all (good) vets have after hour emergency numbers.   If they don't, they are not worth a dime.  Tell him or her your dilemma.  Tell him or her you are out of needles and are on a fixed income.  You might be surprised that they may help you.

Each time you re-use a needle you risk infection, and in a sick cat infection can happen fast and be overwhelming, and I don't think you want to chance that.

Loudpurring (Heidi) had a great suggestion also.

Bless your heart.  You are going through so much.  You and your Wizard are in my prayers.

Melissa
