He was just a little mutt that I had for 14 years. He was one of those once in a lifetime dogs. I had him put down because he had stopped eating, and he was 100% deaf, and seemed to be getting a lot of problems. I keep wondering if I did the right thing?  Out Vet is a very conscientious lady and she did not discorage me frm doing it.

My wife and I miss him so much, even though we have two other dogs. We burried him in our back yard and even made him a headstone. This is much harder than I imagines.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  I think all of us who have ever PTS a pet goes through some guilt.

But we do it out of love and do not want to see our pets suffer.  I am glad you had your dog for 14 years.  I am sure you have many happy memories.

I almost put Pup down about a month ago. Instead I tried some arthritis medicine. He did really well for about three weeks. So I guess I can take comfort in knowing I gave him three more good weeks.

Thank you for your reply.

Dear Daniel T.,

I'm very sorry you had to let your dear little Pup go.  It's a decision that is so painful to make, everyone who has to make it feels hesitation and guilt.  But when our beloved friends are ill and no longer have a good quality of life, we have to help them.  I wish it didn't have to be that way - I suffered greatly when my Boxer had to be put to sleep.  I would have given anything for him to be well and for him to have a good and happy life.  I know how much it has hurt you and your wife, and how much you miss your little boy, Pup.

With deepest sympathy, and I will say a prayer for your Beloved Pup.

Katharine, Grunt's Mom Forever

Daniel T,
I had to put an animal to sleep for the first time in my life(I'm 60) last October. We miss our Molly schnauzer so very much. It was the hardest decision we've ever made, but we know it was the right one.
My prayers are with you and your wife today as you grieve the loss of your beloved Pup.

So sorry for your loss and pain.  I had to PTS my little Ewok baby on 6-24-08.  It is hard to believe that it has been two weeks and the tears still pour out.  This is a wonderful place to come for the support of all those who have been through this and give guidance, comfort and warmth.  I will keep you in my prayers.

Daniel,

I am so sorry you had to let your little Pup go.  I had to do the same almost six months ago for Betsy Noodle, my beloved little 16 year old terrier who suffered from dementia. She was still eating when I hand fed her but she could no longer stand unassisted for long, so I knew it was time.  It was the hardest, but the most merciful decision I have ever made in my life.   She and your Pup are running like puppies at Rainbow Bridge now and will forever live in our hearts.

I understand. I had my Blue PTS June 30th. It's a hard decision to make but also the last act of love we can give our babies.

Now we have fur angels :)

So sorry about your loss.  Some animals take a piece of your heart when they die.  My Rupert took a chunk of mine in Jan and I miss him all day and every day.  He was my friend and companion and when kids and school and everyone at work he was there for me for 15 years.  That I miss and you will too.

I have got all his photos and I talk to him just like he is still with me.  He loved to lie in my daffodil troughs when they weren't flowering so today I made him a memorial garden and put a cross in it and when Spring comes I will have a beautiful garden to remind me of him.  Some animals are special and I will only ever have only Rupert and you will have only one Pup.  Let us hope there is a Rainbow Bridge and they are running free of their pain.  Ruperts Mum

Daniel i am sorry you had to lose your beloved dog.Your story is somewhat similair to mine as i had to pts my 16 1/2 year old mixed breed or mutt as you say.She also was also a once in a lifetime dog who i considered my guardian angel sent from heaven. It is so hard when we see someone we love so much get older and sicker by the day and we pretty much cant help them much. You tried with the meds as i did but sooner or later there is nothing else we can do.I too still feel guilty about having to pts my girl but the life she was living wasnt much fun for her anymore.when they stop eating that is usually a bad sign of things to come. You made the choice out of love and i can see you loved him very much.you couldnt make him young again and free from more pain. You did what was sometimes is necessary although it rips your heart out.try and go easy on yourself i know from experience this can really eat at your emotions.take care

Thank you. I think I did the right thing it is just making that decision is like playing god. Of course god did make us god's over thre animals in the Garden of Eden. I think we should love them as much as god loves us.

The way in which my VET does the proceedure makes it as easy as possible. i told her I would stay until he went to sleep. He went under really fast, and then I left the room. She came out in about five minutes and told me it was done. She gave me a big hug.

We really made him a nice grave, with a marker. So you had your mutt for 16 years? That must have been really hard as well. I love mixed breed dogs because you can find one that is totally unique. One where there can;t be another one like them!
