I lost my chihuahua and my boyfriends dog 4 days apart from each other. In the exact same way. We are heartbroken. I can’t fathom this. My mom let our Chihuahua out back like we do every single day, multiple times a day. She came back out to get him and it was too late, he was already gone. There he was floating in the pool. It’s only been a week but she’s blamed herself daily. He was very old and could hear only a bit. Mind you this was the morning of evacuating before Hurricane Dorian in FL. Stress was already on my mind, I came home to start packing. We sadly had to evacuate without my boy which got my mind semi off of it for 3 days. We brought my boyfriends dog to evacuate with us who is also very old and vision/eyes weren’t perfect. We returned home thankfully to no damage of a hurricane. I slept over at my boyfriends house because I couldn’t stand going home to my house without my Chihuahua yet. I didn’t want to face it. We had an awesome night, he tried to cheer me
Up the past 4 days the best way he could. We went to sleep and Jak was by the bed as usual. My boyfriend woke up at 5:30am to go to the bathroom and asked me where Jak was. I hear him go in his moms room and out one of the patio doors where there is also a doggie door. Jak has never had a problem near the pool and he also goes outside multiple times a day by himself. I woke up to the noise of my bf banging on the door by the pool and screaming bloody murder. I run to unlock the door and see him there, long gone, floating. I cannot bear that this happened to 2 of my babies 4 days apart from each other. How does this happen?!? I cannot take this.. It’s almost embarrassing to explain. I’m ashamed...

So sorry for your loss. You gave those pets a wonderful life since you mention they were old. Nothing to be ashamed about. Accidents happen and stress sometimes affects us as well. God bless and hope slowly you can move on. I lost my puppy to a car accident 5 weeks ago and also feel guilty, but we never intend to hurt our pets on purpose. So in that regards I feel bit better.

Krista please don't blame yourself. I too live in Florida (east coast) and understand completely about the stress it caused coming toward us.
I'm so sorry these incidents happened during this time. They were both accidents. Both dogs were used to being near the pools so there wasn't a reason to be wary. Please know we have all been through the grief of losing a pet and the pain it causes. We are here for you. But you were not at fault.
