I have lost several dogs that I loved in my lifetime, but never had one pass on me while I was on vacation. I lost my elderly beagle Tiger on 12-12-17. The vet says he passed in his sleep from some kind of "acute event," like a heart attack or stroke. What makes it worse is that none of us, not even the vet, had any sign he would go. They said he was alert and playing the day before! ;-(

I feel so guilty and ashamed for leaving him at the vet. I feel like I should have been there for him like he was for me so many times. I pray that he will forgive me for lacking the insight not to leave a 15+ year old dog to be boarded for almost two weeks. What was I thinking? It was so terrible to go back for our other dog and only be bringing her home. Drop off two, bring back one. It's so wrong. If I had any idea he was this close to death, we would have never gone on the trip.

The house feels so weird and empty without is little doggy energy around. How do you replace something that was alive and loving for over 15 years? I am really struggling today and I knew I would be -- our first day back from the trip. My husband is also commenting about it, so I know I'm not just imagining it.

Has any one else lost a pet while on vacation?
