A friend of mine since high school had to put her cat to sleep a couple days ago. This furbaby, Mittens, made it to 18 years old. The decision was made because she was needing constant fluid transfusions and could no longer be comfortable. She was spending more time in a vet's office than at home.

I am so sad about it. My friend absolutely adored that cat, and to be honest, I did, too. 18 years is a long time, and I feel that I, too, have to mourn a love and companionship that lasted so long. Every time she talks about Mittens, my heart breaks and I start bawling again.

I guess part of my sadness is because I also fear and worry about the day when or if I have to do the same for my kitty companion. It's a terrible thought.

Anyhow, this post isn't about me. It's to honor the beautiful and loving and loved creature that is and was Mittens. Please say a prayer for her, think good thoughts, mumble a blessing in her honor.

And realize that sometimes your friend's hearts are broken, too, when you suffer a loss.

To Mittens.
