We just bought a house and our two 7 year old shih tzu brothers were finally going to have their backyard with doggie door. 3 days into the new place an insurance agent came by to take pics, and didn't close our gate. My dog went outside while I was napping with my 9 mo old and escaped the yard, and was hit by a car. Someone stopped and took him to the vet, he had a broken hip and a hernia. My husband was at work and I couldn't make it down to the vet with my son to see him before he was given meds to make him more comfortable. He went in for surgery and was personally cared for overnight by the vet, then passed in the morning. The insurance company is paying for all costs and I can't even process what happened. He was my baby and my best friend. I don't know where to begin to proces, I feel immensely guilty that I was snoozing while he was hit in the street, that I didn't check the gate, that I couldn t comfort him while he was awake, that I couldn't say goodbye. We took his littermate in to say our goodbyes and it was the hardest and saddest thing I've ever witnessed. How do I stop with the what ifs, how do I stay in this house happily and how can I get over this? I don't think I ever will

I am so so very sorry for your pain. I wish I could magically help heal your broken heart but there are never any words to make the pain go away. I wish with all my heart we never had to lose a pet let alone so tragically. I am sending you my love and wish for you to find a way to go on. Please don't be hard on yourself, it happened that's all. You did your best and even with our best sometimes it isn't enough.
Love and doggie hugs
