I put my 14 year old Yorkshire terrier down 2days ago. I live alone and I’m also retired. Deezel and I went to visit my daughter for a week and that is where things started going bad. The family said Deez was very thin, disorientated and looked awful. I didn’t see that till they pointed it out to me. He was also losing control of his bowels. My daughter said it was time so we went to an animal hospital and had him put down. I feel like it was too quick! I wasn’t ready but I think he was. I should have made his last day fabulous but I didn’t. I’m a complete mess crying and racked with guilt. I would do anything to have him back he was my best friend. I truly can’t beleive the pain and loss I feel .i stayed with him till he passed I was holding him and he was kissing me. I am truly broken hearted.how do I handle this grief and guilt?

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you did the best for Deezel. It never feels we have our beloved animals long enough and it’s only natural to feel it was too quick, but you did the unselfish thing and let him be pain free.

I’m 2 weeks on from losing my beloved Raisin suddenly and I’m still full of grief and sadness. At times it is unbearable and there’s no right or wrong way to handle it. I wish I could help take away the intense pain you feel, but with time it will ease a little. The main thing is that he knew you loved him and that’s all that matters.

Please try not to feel guilty, you did nothing wrong, only the best for him.

Thank you Vicky I keep going over that day in my head and think what I could have dotrulyAs I’m thinking about it I think he was more Isick than I realized. You said you lost your pet two weeks ago and you still are having a tough time. I am really sorry for you too. Its truly amazing the bond we have with our pets but when they go so does a piece of our hearts.
All the best to you

Thank you Pam. Yes you are definitely right that they do take a piece of our hearts when they go.

I’m just about functioning now, but the first few days (or week) after I couldn’t eat or sleep, let alone do anything useful. Don’t be too hard on yourself as it’s exhausting grieving isn’t it!

I know what you mean about going over and over the last days or so. There were absolutely no signs that my young cat had anything wrong with him, I don’t think he knew as it was so sudden, I think that is part of why I’m still in disbelief and devastated.

Anyway I’m wittering now, but I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you and know exactly what you are feeling.

Vicky that means so much you telling me this I am barley functioning . I showered today and thought that was a step forward. My daughters just say he had a great life and want me to do all these activities. It’s been 3days and like you can’t stop thinking about him or sleep sharing what you did makes me realize I’m not alone
Thank you so much for your help

Pam you certainly aren’t alone and you should be proud of yourself for having a shower, that is definitely a step forward, believe me I know how much effort that takes when all you want is for the ground to swallow you up. I still get a lot of times like that now.

People in general always expect you to just ‘get over’ losing a pet, but they are family and mean just as much. Everyone feels the same in this forum so please don’t feel alone.

If ever you want to talk feel free to message anytime.
