Please tell me how I can cope with this! My dog was leashed and both my dog and I were invited to my best friend's house to exchange gifts. She has a little chuahua and I had just adopted a 5 year old black Lab. As soon as I got to her entryway my dog immediately grabbed her dog by the throat and shook him 3 times breaking his neck. It was very quick and the dog died in her owner's lap a few minutes later. She says she doesn't blame me, but I blame myself! The event keeps playing over and over again in my mind and I can't stop crying. This happened about 3 days ago. How can I get over this feeling? I don't want to even look at our dog and have been hiding in my room. My husband was supposed to take care of euthanizing the dog but she is still here. It is also new years Eve weekend, so most shelters are closed until tomorrow. Any advice would be helpful. THANKS!

I want to say how sorry I am that this happened. So very painful for you and your friend. Maybe you could contact the shelter (?) where you adopted the dog. It doesn’t sound like you were warned the lab was aggressive towards other dogs. I could never have a dog that was aggressive toward other dogs, but I know responsible owners who do have such dogs. They are just very careful if other dogs are in their vicinity. I don’t know if you adopted from a private party or a rescue shelter. A responsible shelter should have no problems taking her back. A private party may be another matter but , in either case, I don’t know that you could get beyond what happened. I know it would be extremely hard for me. My heart hurts for you.

Thanks for your support. I euthanized the dog yesterday (did this alone and couldn't wait for my husband to get this done). Her former owner also called me yesterday and said I did the right thing. The vet was also helpful. Taking one more day to process then back to work.
