Me and my schnauzer met each other when I was 11. I had to move away from home when I turned 24 to pursue a career in a different country. This year he turned 16 and although he was old we felt he was doing okay. Enough for my mom to leave the country and visit me and my sisters in a different continent. We left him with a friend of my moms and two days after my mom arrived he got very sick, he couldn't stand up anymore and he puked himself. I knew at that moment that the end was coming, but I was hoping he would be able to wait for my mom. A day passed and there was no improvement, he got worse, they took him to the vet and he called us and we decided it was time... I can't stop crying. He was there through my parents divorce, he was there when I failed, when I cried and I wasn't there for him. I feel so guilty for not being there for him and I can't stand the fact that I will never see him again. He was my friend and my brother and I will love him forever.

I'm so sorry, it's terrible to feel so helpless.

I'm so sorry, Cristina. Schnauzers have a special place in my heart. That was the breed of my first dog.

Please be gentle with yourself. Don't beat yourself up. You loved your brother and he loved you. He wouldn't want you to be sad. You know you would do things differently if you could; you didn't do anything wrong.

Remember him with love. Think of the joy he brought into your life. Don't let his end tarnish everything you had with him.

Come back and talk to us if you need to.
