A good friend who lost her parrot a little while back sent me here.

I don't know what the heck I'm doing.  My dog was released from life about an hour ago, and he is still sitting next to me in a bag awaiting me to dig his final resting place.

He was a good dog.  He was 15 years old.  Yesterday morning, he woke up and could not walk.  Today he was gone. I never imagined this happening so fast, I foresaw a slow decline into the senior years with a peaceful passing in his sleep.

Instead he was in great pain, but got to die at home.  A wonderful vet was able to come to us since I could not move him.  The vet thinks it was a tumor pushing on his spinal cord causing the great pain.

I keep absently looking over at him, willing him to get up again and come and give me a kiss on the face to chase away all my tears.  But he doesn't. He is still, gone but not gone.

He was a good boy.  I got him a few years ago at the humane society.  He was old when I got him.  No one wanted this old mutt.  He had been in and out of 3 shelters!  We were able to count 6 different homes that we knew of.  No one knew why, he was good.  No behavior or health problems. Till yesterday.

What to do now?  Dig a hole, cry some more.  This is my first dog that I got all on my own.  Now  he's gone.  What to do?  How do you stop crying?

Dear Dayna,

I'm so sorry about the loss of your dog.  What was his name?  It is so very difficult to go through this kind of pain, but what I see in your words is the fact that you showed this old guy love in his last years here.  He must have been happy, and although he was in pain, he is no longer.  And, he went to the bridge (with all of our pets greeting him!) with love in his heart that he carries forever.  You have that love in your heart, as well.  Although he is gone physically, he will never be gone in spirit...he's still right there.

Do you have friends who could maybe help you with burying him?  It seems like a difficult thing to do alone.  But, if you do, please know that you are not really alone -- he will be with you (as I said) and all of us here will be with you too.  Sending you strength and support.

Please let us know how you're doing.  I'm so sorry, Dayna.

Oh, my God, Dayna.  Your post gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.

I am so sorry you have lost your beloved boy.  The shock of it happening so fast and unexpectedly has to be just horrific.  And, he is simply beautiful.

There is a special place in heaven for people like you who adopt older pups.  How very blessed the two of you were to belong to each other, even if it was for a relatively short period of time.  What love he must have felt!

Let yourself cry, and cry some more.  That is how you start down the treacherous path of grief.  And, PLEASE come here for solace.  There are some wonderful people here who helped me tremendously when I lost my beloved terrier, Betsy, in January.  We will be here for you.  You can count on that.

Hugs and prayers,

Melissa

Dear Dayna
What a beautiful boy he is, and what a wonderful person you are to have adopted an old guy and given him so much love.  How lucky you both are to have found one another.  I am so sorry that he has had to leave you.  I am thinking of you. Love Di, xxx

Dear Dayna

I am so sorry for the loss of your dog.  He reminds me of my Sadie, who I lost about 10 years ago.  She was a black lab/golden retriever cross and looked just like your boy.  I know the loss is painful and it is hard to believe they are really gone, but eventually the tears will diminish and you will begin to smile as you remember the good times with him.  I hope you find comfort in knowing that you gave him a loving home, something he had evidently not had before he found you.  What a lucky dog to have been able to live out his final years with you.  You are a very special caring person.

Hugs and prayers

Dear Dayna
Im am sorry you lost you dog.  He looks gorgeous.
It takes a special person to take on unwanted pets and give them love and kindness that they have never been shown before.  Your dog loved you for that and is now at peace running at the Rainbow Bridge.

If you don't want to bury, you can have your dog cremated and keep the ashes close to you.  Your can take them when you move house.  Whichever way you decide it is going to be painful.  Tears are good and they will come for a while. I wish you all the best in your decision.

Dear Dayna,

What a beautiful sweet boy, I am so sad for you that he is gone.  Bless your heart for taking him into your heart and home, where he found much love and belonging during the last years of his life.  You are an angel.

My heart goes out to you in your pain and disbelief.  Please do come back here, it will help.  We would love to know your sweet boy's name.

With deepest sympathy,
Katharine, Grunt's Mom Forever

I am so sorry for the loss of your dog. It is so hard to go through. I have a friend that has a sanctuary for the old and sick dogs and cats. She will take them out of shelters before they are euthanised for beig to old and sick. I have no idea how she can do it. But she takes a dog that has never known love or a good life and she takes them in and gives them this wonderful home where she loves them very much, and they know it. she usually only has a few months to spend with them before they go. It hurts her each time but she still does it over and over. I think this is because it doesn't matter to her how much it hurts her, it is more important to her to give these poor unfortunate pets a chance to be loved and respected even if for only a month or so.

So what I am trying to say is that you gave this poor older dog that was shuffled around from home to home a chance to know that someone really cared and that he was good enough to belong to someone. What you did was so kind and what he gave you in return was so grand. Please try to remember the good if you do he will live on in your heart forever.

Thank you all so much for your replies.  It was hard this morning.  I woke up and that was the first thought on my mind.  He's gone.  No old dog to trip over this morning on the way to the bathroom.  He had a habit of laying right where you wanted to step.

His name is/was Bailey.

Dayna Your boy Bailey was handsome.  I'm so sorry for your loss but the first thing I thought while reading your post was what a lucky boy he was that you gave him a forever home even though he was older.  I always think it's such a shame that older animals are often considered unadoptable.

Again sorry for your loss.

Dayna,

I'm so sorry that I asked what his name "was". I truly believe that spirits as great as these furry guys that have loved us so well do not ever leave, or die. His name IS Bailey and always will be. I'm sorry for that error.

I hope you're doing okay. My thoughts are with you.

Big hugs,

Dayna, what a  gorgeous dog!  He looks similar to my Kirby in the face!!  I am facing the decline of my husky  mix who is one month shy of turning 14 but having trouble with his back legs.  He's slowed down quite a bit this year and I fear the end will soon be here.

I know how hard it is to lose a pet, as I've pts four dogs before Kirby.

You were a good Mommy to have him so long, take comfort in that fact and know that he loves you and will be waiting for you when your time comes, tail wagging, ever youthful.

Dayna--Bailey is quite a handsome dog. He looks so laid back and loveable. It's so hard when it happens so quick like this--you don't have time to process what's happened. Take care of yourself and very sorry for your loss.

It is very strange to watch my dog grieve with me. My family is doing fine, my 11 year old daughter is going on like it never happened and my husband was not as attached as I was.

My GSD though, Aurora, is very depressed.  She'll be 2 next month.  SHe keeps walking in circles, looking in his spots.  Her ears are always laid back on her head.  She's not eating much and being extra clingy.

I really miss him.

Dayna,

I'm so very sorry for your loss.   Bailey is so very beautiful.

Bless you for adopting this precious older guy...   You gave him his own "fur"ever home...   You gave him all your love.   I can't even imagine why he was at the Humane Society, nor can I understand how he was in and out of 3 shelters.   He is such a doll and treasure.

Thank you for loving an older homeless black dog.   You were his angel....   He is yours now...   He is with you and watching over you and your family.

My heart goes out to you.  I feel your pain.   I lost my Ami, 3 weeks ago...   Ami used to be a homeless, too.   He was a stray that adopted me 18 yrs ago.

God bless your generous heart...

Agata/Ami's Forever Mom
