We lost a dog to cancer at Christmas, and we spent a while deciding when to get a new friend for our remaining dog. 3 weeks ago we decided to adopt from a transport and got the cutest little guy. He wa very insecure and needed some decompression time. My daughter asked to take him with her while my other dog was at the vet. She called me upset, the dog got scared and ran off. We followed and called to him that night, but he would not come to any of us. We spent the last 8 days trying to catch him. We had frequent reports and every day we tried something else to get him back. Yesterday I got up extra early because he had been seen up and down the road. No where to be found. I got called a few hours later, he had been hit and killed. I feel so guilty that I couldn’t catch him, that he spent his last 8 days scared and lonely, that I accepted the responsibility for this beautiful little guy and let everyone down. I didn’t sleep at all last night, not so much thst he was no longer with me, but thst I had failed him. How do my daughter and I get passed this?

I am so very sorry for you loss and I understand your pain. Like many of us on this board, what you have experienced was an accident. No one is to blame. I know that this doesn't make this any easier to bear....my cat Green Bean died in an accident a couple of weeks ago and it still hurts.

I know Green Bean was there, along with so many of our other lost pets, to meet your puppy at the Rainbow Bridge.

Keep the faith.

Thank you, I’m working through the guilt and hope to be ready to adopt again. We were so happy to add a little friend for our other dog, who was lonely after her companion passed at Christmas. She wasn’t thrilled with the puppy, but now seems even sadder. So maybe we will look again, sooner than I originally thought.
