We rushed my sweet Ollie to the emergency vet on Saturday when his breathing became labored. His lungs were filled with fluid due to congestive heart failure.

Last year my human son was very ill, and I neglected taking my pets in for their annual physical. If I had, maybe the vet would have detected a heart murmur or other sign of Ollie’s heart disease.

The guilt is crushing me.

Oh I'm so sorry... I took my Tiger in last Sunday when his breathing was so fast...

I hate to say you are going to go through days of wondering if you should have made other choices and whether it would have made a difference. Read the message boards we are all doing it. It's torture though.

In my case I saw vets multiple times but nature does what nature does. I moved it along at the end as I didn't want him feeling sick.

There's as good a chance that the check up would have been fine and nothing to do. Six months ago 16 yr old Tiger had excellent bloodwork. The vet commented that in a 16 yr old cat there is usually SOMETHING to see. Three weeks ago he changed immensely. It is 6 months after his last bloodwork
and this time his bloodwork showed stage 3 kidney disease.. but I think it was actually past that. In three days he also had laboured breathing and probably fluid in his lungs. It was too.much. I tried so hard to make him feel.better that last day and nothing was helping.

Trying to find your fault is part of this grieving process. I hope you get through it soon. Not everything is in our control. It's really not.

Take care and hugs

Thank you for sharing your loss.

Our pets depend on us for everything, and I let him down. I don’t think I can ever forgive myself.
