Perhaps this may help some of you who have to make that final decision and I hope and pray it will bring some comfort to those of us who have already made it. God Bless. ----Jerry in Oklahoma.

author unknown

You're giving me a special gift,

So sorrowfully endowed,

And through these last few cherished days,

Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing

When your best friend is in pain,

And understanding earthly acts

Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,

Beyond, into your soul,

I see in you the magic, that will

Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,

Is why I look to you today,

To do this thing that must be done,

For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,

And chose you as my friend,

And why I've loved you all these years...

My partner till the end.

Please, understand just what this gift

You're giving, means to me,

It gives me back the strength I've lost,

And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,

For that is what friends do.

And know that what you do is right,

For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,

And through your hand I feel,

The courage that's within you,

To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,

Dear friend, and let me run,

Once more a strong and steady dog,

My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,

For I won't be far away,

Forever here, within your heart,

And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,

Your ever faithful friend,

And in your memories I'll run,

... a young dog once again.

Grieve not
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you...
I loved you so-
Twas Heaven here with you.

Oh, Jerry, when I got to the part that said "cut the leash...and let me run" I just lost it.  Betsy LOVED to run off her leash and I could just envision her at the Bridge, running like a young pup again with your Peaches.

This is one of the most beautiful poems I have ever read and it is so comforting.

Thank you.

Jerry, thanks for posting this really hits home with myself and im sure others also.I have struggled with the choice to put to sleep my 16 1/2 dog recenty and this poem does give me some sense of relief. It is just so hard and unfair when we must say goodbye to someone we love so much>it is the most helpless feeling in the world.I hope this poem can bring some comfort to myself and others who share the pain of having to let their loved pets go.I know there will always be some sort of guilt invovled as we are human with emotions but sometimes there is no right choice to make.most times there is only 2 bad choices and we have to decide which one is best.It is so unfair but as animal loving caretakers we have the responsiblity to do whats best for our beloved.thanks for posting take care

Thank you Jerry.  My tears flow freely as I read your beautiful poem.

It is two months tomorrow since we had our little Pepe PTS.  He was in such pain at the end and in such misery, our only real choice was the choice we made.  Whenever I feel any guilt I just picture him in his last few days and know we did the right thing.

He is now a young pup once more, running freely with all the other animals who have gone before him.

Hi Jerry,
Thank you for posting this poem.
Having read it before I found that the author was listed in several places as the following.
In Memory of Asta, Feb. 1997
(c) Karen Clouston
One more pet owner who dared to love deeply and loved enough to take on the pain by sending her baby to Rainbow Bridge.
May we all who have had to make that decision know that we did so with only love and devotion for our pets.
Love and peace,

Thanks Jerry C for posting that poem, it is so lovely and touching, words cannot say how much I miss my little best friend Toby, who I had to put to sleep on Sat, July 5, 2008, he was so loyal and loving, the best dog ever, and I can't wait to see him again in heaven, I wish I could go there now and be with him.  Thank you again, and God bless you and all pet lovers.

Thank you.  That poem is comforting to all of us who have been in that position.  I pray that my once strong Scruffy is happy and healthy again and she understands why I had to do it.  I hope it is what she would have wanted me to do.  Scruffy loved life and a big part of her life was running, walking and swimming.  These things we did together, and she could no longer do because of her kidney failure.  I know she didn't want to be force fed from a syringe.  She loved to eat too.  I miss her every day, but I don't question my decision.  Godspeed to all our babies.
